80’s Music: The Smiths

Confession: Not a huge Smiths’ fan.  I think How Soon is Now? is one of the great songs of the 80’s, but the band never captured me like its contemporaries such as The Cure, U2, Psychedelic Furs, or Depeche Mode.  Wasn’t even planning on doing a separate piece on them, until I started going back on Morrissey’s solo career and felt they were worthy.  Below are my 4 favorite Smiths’ songs.

I would argue that the first 3 singles of Morrissey’s solo career stack up with anything he did with the Smiths.  Suedehead, Everyday is like Sunday, and Last of the International Playboys were released within a year of each other between 1988-89.

Finally, a cool cover of the Smiths’ Headmaster Ritual by Radiohead.
